    • Recognize you, too, are human. Everyone makes mistakes, some bigger than others. If your spouse or friend made similar mistakes, you may even tell them, “To err is human,” so they can feel better about themselves.
    • Quit beating up on yourself. You're quick to comfort others when they make mistakes, fail, or feel hurt. Rather than judging them harshly, you soothe and encourage them.
    • Acknowledge your struggles. It seems easy to just ignore the obstacles or negative emotions you face. Unprocessed emotions will remain there until they are properly dealt with.
    • Forgive yourself. Our relationship with ourselves sets the pace for relationships with others. Self-forgiveness means to quit punishing yourself for missteps.
    • Be selfless. Put yourself in others’ shoes. Place your happiness in the happiness of others. Instead of just thinking and caring for yourself, start caring for others.
    • Be humble. Free yourself of pride. Stop feeling superior to others, don’t act like you know everything, admit your own mistakes, and learn to forgive people.
    • Get rid of your hatred. Learn how to stop hating and starting loving. Stop judging people, forcing them to change, and getting mad at them when your wants are not met.
    • Listen carefully. Do not ignore people when they talk to you. Don’t talk too much but give them the opportunity to express themselves. Listen to their stories to know what they are dealing with.

    • Be a Good Listener. One of the best ways to show our compassion is to listen. There is a difference between hearing and listening. Listening means we take an interest in what the person is saying.
    • Be Empathetic. There is a difference between being sympathetic and empathetic. Being empathetic means that we put ourselves in the other person's shoes. It doesn't mean you have to have been in jail or poor to understand the plight of those experiencing it.
    • Be an Advocate. The Bible calls us to be an advocate for the downtrodden. There are plenty of persecuted and oppressed people in the world and plenty of organizations designed to be the voice of the voiceless.
    • Be a Volunteer. Being an advocate is often tied to being a volunteer. Sometimes volunteering is as simple as going to a retirement home and offering your time or being a tutor for underprivileged kids.
