Aoba-ku (青葉区) is one of five wards of Sendai, the largest city in the Tōhoku region of Japan. Aoba-ku encompasses 302.278 km² and had a population of 296,551, with 147,622 households as of March 1, 2012.
Sep 22, 2023 · Masamune Date (1567–1636), the founder and greatest ruler of the Sendai Domain, once looked out over his lands from the magnificent Aoba Castle. Now, centuries later, the castle is no more. The castle site now serves as a public park of sorts.
Aoba Castle (青葉城, Aobajō) was built in 1600 by the powerful feudal lord Date Masamune. Because of considerations for the castle's defense, Masamune chose to locate his fortifications on Mount Aoba, 100 meters above the town below.
Aoba-dori Avenue is one of the newest streets in Sendai, having been built after the war. Similar to the more famous Jozenji Street, zelkova trees were planted here as a form of recovery through nature and city beautification.
