Munakata (宗像市, Munakata-shi) is a city in Japan, located in Fukuoka Prefecture. As of 31 March 2024, the city had an estimated population of 96,786 in 44884 households, and a population density of 810 persons per km². [1] The total area of the city is 119.94 km 2 (46.31 sq mi).
Munakata lies to the northeast of the city of Fukuoka and is home to three World Heritage Munakata shrines. The shrines are within the bounds of Munakata City, while the oldest is on the forbidden island of Okinoshima.

Munakata (宗像) is a city in Fukuoka Prefecture and home to the three Munakata Shrines (Munakata Taisha), the head shrines of several thousand Munakata shrines across Japan. The original shrine stands on the remote, sacred island of Okinoshima which is off-limits to the public.
On the mainland, in Munakata, is Hetsu-miya Shrine (known as Munakata Taisha), believed to be one of the oldest Shinto ritual sites in Japan. The nearby island of Oshima is home to Nakatsu-miya Shrine, an ancient shrine with beautiful ocean views.
