Now that (almost) everyone has decided that venomous and poisonous are essentially interchangeable, I'll add to Rational gaze's distinction between the words (post #3). The distinction between poisonous and venomous is how the substance (poison or venom) is administered or delivered.

With "success or failure" you're not comparing and contrasting success and failure in the sense that you're trying to list differences between them. You're saying that the one precludes the other.
