Lieutenant-General James Edward Oglethorpe (22 December 1696 [1] – 30 June 1785) was a British Army officer, Tory politician and colonial administrator best known for founding the Province of Georgia in British North America.
James Edward Oglethorpe was an English army officer, philanthropist, and founder of the British colony of Georgia in America. Educated at the University of Oxford, he entered the army in 1712 and joined the Austrian army fighting the Turks in 1717.
