On 9 May 2012, President Tony Tan Keng Yam issued a writ of election for the electoral division of Hougang. Nominations were held on 16 May at Serangoon Junior College and polls are conducted on 26 May.

In 2006 General Election, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong assigned Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong to win back Hougang. SM Goh promised Hougang voters $100 million for upgrading, in exchange for voting for the PAP. What happened? Mr Low Thia Khiang’s votes went up by nearly 8%, from 55% to 63%!
This history of autonomy took root when Hougang was carved out as a SMC in 1988. And it is still present today, in this by-election, where I believe that the voters here in Hougang know exactly what choice will serve their interests best.
In May 2012, one year after the watershed eleventh general elections, Singapore held its first by-election in nineteen years in the single-member constituency of Hougang. The contest was in the opposition heartland held by the Worker’s Party (WP) since 1991.

May 26, 2012 · Is the issue a concern to Hougang voters in this by-election? As far as they are concerned, they are making a choice based on how their MP would fit into their own parties. Png is a favoured member in the WP, and toes party lines readily.
