Lenexa has been a forward-thinking place from its earliest days in the 1800s as a wagon trail stop along the Santa Fe Trail. That key route helped open new U.S. territories for economic development and settlement. Today, Lenexa encompasses 34.45 square miles of land in Johnson County and occupies a strategic location in the metro area.
- Lenexa Public Market. Lenexa’s newly developed city center has been dubbed, The District, with blocks of new buildings interwoven with green spaces. Here, next to the Johnson County Library building, is the Lenexa Public Market.
- Black Hoof Park. With a name paying tribute to the Shawnee Native Americans who lived in the area in the 19th century, Black Hoof Park is the kind of public space any city would be proud of.

Lenexa was officially incorporated in 1907. Lenexa’s namesake. In our area, there are many indigenous tribes with long histories. Lenexa got its name from a member of the Shawnee Nation, a woman named Na-Nex-Se. Back in 1825, the Shawnee Nation made an agreement with the government.
