In the second half of May 1940, the Bank for International Settlements relocated to Château-d'Œx from Basel, out of fear of an imminent German invasion of Switzerland. BIS President Thomas H. McKittrick and economic adviser Per Jacobsson moved into the nearby château of Rougemont , while the rest of the staff found accommodation in the village.
