Chiswick St Nicholas was an ancient, and later civil, parish in the Ossulstone hundred of Middlesex. Until 1834 its vestry governed most parish affairs. After the Poor Law Amendment Act (1834) , local administration in Chiswick began to be devolved to authorities beyond the vestry.

Chiswick’s beloved live theatre, the Chiswick Empire opened in 1912 and there were three cinemas. Hogarth House opened as a museum in 1904. The fabric of Chiswick was relatively unscathed during World War I, although three bombs fell on Chiswick High Road, injuring five people, damaging surrounding property and smashing gas and water mains.
Chiswick House is among the most glorious examples of 18th-century British architecture and makes a fascinating day out in West London. The 3ird Earl of Burlington, who designed this noble Roman-style Palladian villa, drew inspiration from his Grand Tours of Italy.

It is known chiefly for Chiswick House, near its centre, and for 18th- and 19th-century buildings at Chiswick village, hereafter referred to as Old Chiswick, and Strand-on-the-Green, respectively at the eastern and western ends of the loop.
Chiswick is located in the county of Greater London, London, six miles west of the city of City of Westminster, 13 miles south-east of the major town of Watford, and six miles west of London. Chiswick lies seven miles north of the Surrey border, and was historically in the county of Middlesex.
