It’s a rather vague term that covers a range of sub-genres, but generally refers to music that is more current than styles like swing, bebop and modal jazz.

    • Esperanza Spalding. Sounding like a young Joni Mitchell fronting Return To Forever on steroids, this Portland-born singer, composer, and bass virtuoso is extending the frontiers of jazz with boundary-breaking music that embraces rock, funk, Latin, jazz fusion, and the avant-garde.
    • Ezra Collective. Formed of 5 of London’s premiere instrumentalists, Ezra collective are championing the new wave of UK Jazz music. The rich instrumentals played flawlessly throughout their songs, leave you appreciating their individual display of talent.
    • Nubya Garcia. Nubya Nyasha Garcia is a British jazz artist, saxophonist, composer and bandleader. Her debut album, Source, is a modern Jazz masterpiece.
    • Alfa Mist. Alfa Mist is a talented pianist and music producer from in Newham, East London. He weaves heavy beats into his music and released a solo piano project entitled On My Ones recently.
    • Yussef Dayes. Yussef Dayes is a drummer and composer with deep roots in the South London jazz scene. He has grown his reputation through a broad network of collaborators in the scene, including Freddie Gibbs, Tom Misch, Masego, Alfa Mist and more.
    • Cécile McLorin Salvant. Ghost Song. Nonesuch. 'The primary undercurrent is a sense of haunting, of restlessness and torment. It is all there in Salvant’s finely shaded voice down to every careful accent and emphasis on revelatory lyrics, which are potently consolidated by the advanced subtleties of an ensemble in which master guitarist Marvin Sewell is both a suitably corporeal and spectral presence, drawing on his consummate bluesiness with no concession to cliché.'
    • Charles Lloyd. Trios: Chapel. Blue Note. 'The close relationship Frisell and Lloyd have fostered is built on a shared musical DNA of homespun, black-rooted popular Americana and a certain spiritual, some might say spaced-out, vibe.
    • Immanuel Wilkins. The 7th Hand. Blue Note. 'Not unlike his biggest hero Kenny Garrett, Wilkins on The 7th Hand plays the alto with a deceivingly wispy yet soulful tone.
    • Mary Halvorson. Amaryllis/Belladonna. Nonesuch. 'The release of either of these albums would be significant: but to have them released simultaneously is a major musical event.'
