Hip house, also known as rap house or house rap, is a musical genre that mixes elements of house music and hip hop music, that originated in both London, United Kingdom and Chicago, United States in the mid-to-late 1980s.

    • Mike Dunn - So Let it Be Houze! (1988) Among the first pioneers of Chicago house music, DJ and producer Mike Dunn was also a big hip-hop head. His decision to rap over this sparse, skeletal acid track marks it as arguably the first instance of hip-house – or of NYC and Chicago cross-pollinating in this way.
    • Jungle Brothers – I’ll House You (1988) If you had to distill hip-house down to a single track, you’d be left with I’ll House You. No other track quite captures the lightning-in-a-bottle vibe.
    • Maurice – This Is Acid (1988) When acid house became a craze, Maurice Joshua tapped into the trend, curiously leaving out the 303 synth squelches that typified the style.
    • Tyree Cooper – Turn Up the Bass (1988) A Chicago house original, Tyree Cooper was among the first to hit upon the idea of bringing his two beloved styles together.
