In recent years, Hsinchu County has gradually developed into the “Silicon Valley of Taiwan” for its advanced technology with many universities of science and technology settling down.
Hsinchu City is located in the northwestern part of Hsinchu County, its highest point rising only 120 meters above sea level. The Hsinchu plain slopes upward to the east, and merges into Eighteen Peaks Mountain and Niupu Mountains.
With a history of almost 400 years, Hsinchu is the oldest city in northern Taiwan. It was originally inhabited by an aboriginal tribe called Taokas who called the city 'Chuchien', and the present name, Hsinchu, was adopted at the end of the 19th century, during the reign of the Qing Dynasty Emperor Guangxu.
