  2. A solution comes from the mathtools package, which defines \vcentcolon and \coloneqq commands; these lead to two different results, as regards the horizontal spacing between the colon and the equality sign. Compare: The \coloneq (one q!) symbol exists in mathabx, Mnsymbol and fdsymbol (at least). It's named \coloneqq in kpfonts and mdsymbol.

  3. So you could presumably get your backslash by typing: \verb=\=. You can also add a * – i.e. \verb* or \begin {verbatim*} – to make whitespace visible. It is interesting to speculate how you would get an example of a verbatim environment into a document.. (using \verb to do the last line, I guess) Share.

  4. I tried to write a sentence which includes the %-symbol using \text {}, but the function that the %-symbol has in LaTeX seems to block me from using it in a normal text sentence. Welcome to TeX.SX! You have to type \% (backslash percent) to get a percent sign. See also Escape character in LaTeX.

  5. Oct 28, 2012 · The helper macro captures the current math style and re-uses it inside an \rlap. The double use of the symbol is just for spacing purposes, adding to the \mkern insertion. That is, it sets the symbol \perp (of width 0pt and r ight over lap), inserts of 2mu kern (pushing the "cursor" to the right 2mu s) and then inserts the symbol again.

  6. @gboffi It's a consequence of the internal representation of dimensions in TeX. Everything is, at its lowest level an integer (portable floating point arithmetic wasn't standardized until 1985, well after TeX82's release, so Knuth had to implement his algorithms ex nihilo) and dimensions are represented in integer quantities of sp = 1/65536pt.

  7. Textmode. You can always check detexify. Using \sim would appear to be the mathematically most correct way, since it produces TILDE OPERATOR (which is vertically positioned at operator level) as opposite to the Ascii TILDE (typically positioned higher).

  8. Apr 27, 2019 · 3. @Saeed: It's a package =). You can load it by putting \usepackage{mathabx} in your document preamble. I never used myself, but I found it in The Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List, page 23. You can find other alternative symbols in there.

  9. Jan 20, 2012 · I would say most people use (for short texts) the first usage because it follows the common \somemacro{<content>} LaTeX style. The latter should be used if you want to make the rest of an environment/group bold, of course. You should note that \textbf uses \bfseries internal, so the latter is a more fundamental macro.
