Pembroke Castle has a long and fascinating history, for it was around 1093 that Arnulf de Montgomery built the small inner bailey standing at the end of the promontory. Only a few years later the castle withstood a long siege by the Welsh, although its defenders were near starvation.

Soon after the Battle of Hastings in 1066 the victorious Norman invaders looked to Wales, but it was not until 1093 that Earl Roger of Montgomery built the first Pembroke Castle. Although it was a fairly basic structure of timber palisades the castle stood firm against Welsh counter attacks.

Pembroke Castle will be once again hosting its annual Christmas Market which has been a big hit since its launch in 2012. In 2022 over 10,000 festive visitors enjoyed free admission to what is fast becoming one of Pembrokeshire's must attend events of the year.
