Volkswagen Beetle Transmission Problems. 68mgb Member Posts: 2. March 2007 edited May 2015. I have a 99 Beetle w/60M miles. Recently it sat for a month with a dead battery. When I charged the battery and began driving it i had transmission problems. At forst it would be shifting through 2nd and 3rd and would slip sending the rpm's up to 5-6M.

I purchased a used, 2005, Volkswagen Beetle Turbo GLS for my wife in July of 2008. At the time of purchase, the vehicle had approximately 24K miles, and to date has 32K miles. The four-year bumper to bumper warranty expired in February of 2009; however, the vehicle is still well below the 50K mile warranty threshold.

I checked the NHTSA site. There are at least 40 others in the past year that have also had the same problem. The problem is the NHTSA site has 3 types of cars the Beetle, New Beetle, and New Beetle Convertiable. And they all have the same transmision and the same problem showing up. A friend of mine recently had an oil change on her Passat and part of the bill for her $70 (no typo!) oil change was a $30 charge for the oil filter (yikes!).
After starting it will run for anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes and then shut down. It will not restart for at least 5 minutes. Upon restart it might never quit again or it might quit after another period of time. It doesn't run rough or give any other symptoms that its going to quit. It just shuts down.
