Bull sharks are found in coastal waters all over the world. In the United States they are found off the East Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike most sharks, bull sharks can survive in freshwater for long periods of time. They have even been found in the Mississippi and Amazon Rivers.
The bull shark is a predatory species that lives in coastal seas and is the shark with the best ability to move into freshwaters – particularly large, coastal rivers and lakes. They are able to move back and forth between saltwater and freshwater with ease.
Their name comes from their short, blunt snout and their habit of head-butting prey before they attack, kind of like a charging bull. And yes, they can be quite aggressive. Unlike most other sharks, bull sharks can venture out of saltwater habitats and handle brackish or even fresh water.
Bull Sharks are summer visitors to Chesapeake Bay, occurring from late June through September. Within the Chesapeake Bay, Bull Sharks are most often encountered from the ocean to the mid-bay and within the Potomac River and Tangier Sound, but they have been found all the way up the estuary near the mouth of the Susquehanna River.
