Ljusdal (Swedish: [ˈjʉ̌ːsdal]) [2] is a locality and the seat of Ljusdal Municipality, Gävleborg County, Sweden with 6,230 inhabitants in 2010. [1] Ljusdal is situated on Riksväg 83 which runs between Tönnebro in Söderhamn Municipality in Gävleborg County and Ånge in Västernorrland County.
Ljusdal Municipality (Ljusdals kommun) is one of Sweden's 290 municipalities within Gävleborg County. Its seat is Ljusdal. The municipality was formed in 1971 by the amalgamation of the market town (köping) of Ljusdal (instituted in 1914) with the rural municipalities Järvsö, Färila, Los and Ramsjö.

Namnet Ljusdal (1314 Lyusdal) är sammansatt av orden ljus och dal, syftandes till placeringen i Ljusnans dalgång, alternativt det äldre namnet på Kyrksjön som bör ha hetat Lius (siōr) eller liknande.
Orten fick ett ekonomiskt uppsving när järnvägen kom på 1880-talet. Vid denna tid uppfördes de panelhus som än i dag sätter sin prägel på stadsbilden, även om många har rivits. I Ljusdal grundades 1907 Sveriges första enskilda folkpark.
Ortens största arbetsgivare utanför den offentliga sektorn ligger inom tjänstesektorn, främst telefonsupport och callcenter. Här finns också en av Sveriges enda fristående a-kassor, Alfa-kassans, kontor. En av världens största mediekoncerner, Reed Elsevier, har två verksamheter i centralorten, Byggfakta samt First Index.
Den kommunala Stenhamreskolan med klasser mellan årskuserna 1 och 9 är kommunens största.
