  1. Jul 23, 2008 · I'd appreciate a bit of help regarding the OAL of .270 Win factory ammunition. SAAMI spec is 3.340" max & I want to know how various factory rounds compare with that. Make, bullet weight, bullet type & OAL would be appreciated. If anyone has a Hornady OAL gauge, I'd appreciate the measurements as both OAL & using the gauge with appropriate ...

  2. Nov 10, 2003 · I was wondering--since there are differences in tolerances--which do you find to be more accurate when shooting, measuring to the "ogive" with the comparator, or measuring to the tip of bullet (c.o.a.l)-since non of the seating dies seat by using the tip of the bullet there always seems to be differences in OAL I have found differences in the bullets over all length, but also difference to the ...

  3. Jan 31, 2008 · Aug 5, 2008. #9. Using your .270 as an example, I would try to get a minimum of .250-.270 of the bullet in the neck of the case, not counting the boattail. With long throats and\or short bullets this may drive how close you can get the bullet to the lands. One bullet diameter is usually enough to give good case to bullet concentricity.

  4. Oct 20, 2019 · H1000, Hornady brass, Fed 210M primers, 3.34" OAL, 22" bbl as mentioned. 58.5 gr, 2881 fps. 59.0 gr, 2885 fps. Not sure why the half grain seems to have had little affect. The two tests were a few weeks apart, and these were shooting so bad, I didn't bother recording the details and gave up on the 145X at that point.

I entered the 300 PRC in my quick load and quick design and that should get you started. Running a 24" 1:9 with : 78 grains h1000 I was at pressure with Fed 215M primers at averaging 2887 fps.

  6. Dec 27, 2012 · There are three ways we can establish an OAL for rifles. First is the max length that will feed and function through the magazine OR go by factory length - that's the SAAMI standard length. Second is book OAL length and all that means is the length the guys who developed the listed data used in their rifle.

  8. Jan 16, 2018 · Same calculation gives me 3.696 for a 208 ELDM, but actual measuring of the OAL with a Sinclair gauge (and "mark the tip" and "will it close") gives me 3.666 currently. This barrel has over 1000 rounds through it (early OAL measurements were ~3.60), and has clearly lost a lot of throat.

  9. Sep 8, 2012 · 290. Location. Booneville, Ar. Sep 8, 2012. #1. I have tried the Frankford arsenal gauge and I dare you to try and get the same measurment twice (even close). I have also tried the Hornady OAL gauge but the brass was not sized and wouldn't fit in the chamber ( brass far to big) and when my father-in-law tried to size it, it crushed the case.

  10. Dec 16, 2019 · Long Island, New York. Dec 16, 2019. #8. Most shooters that are using the OAL guage just use Hornady's modified cases which (obviously) haven't been fired in the shooter's rifle. Presumably, any case actually fired in your rifle would be a better option. I have probably 25 modified cases.
