Gary Jules eventually left the band, leaving Michael Andrews to fill the lead guitarist/vocalist role. In 1985, while in college, the band recorded their first single with producer Matt Silver and at Western Audio in San Clemente. The 7" single, titled "Music To My Ears" (b/w "Staff And Glove") was released on Pop Records.

The simplicity and rawness of the original Tears for Fears version resonated with the director, and he believed that a reimagined rendition would perfectly complement the film’s themes.
