Tian Zhuangzhuang is one of the most prominent filmmakers of China's Fifth Generation, along with Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige. He was born in Beijing in 1952, to a family that was a part of the Communist elite. His father was Tian Fang, a noted actor from the 1930s and a director for the Beijing Film Studios after the Communists gained power.

His movie The Blue Kite (1993), was so controversial he was forced to exile from the movie business.
