  1. Nov 19, 2020 · Book royalties are unrelated to movie profits. I've seen comments that maybe one unit licensed the books to another for something like $1, so the people who owe him money don't have any. This probably won't stand up in court, but Disney has busloads of lawyers and Alan Dean Foster and his wife aren't in the best of health.

  4. Mar 24, 2021 · I remember way back in the 90s, when Nina Simone's ouevre (I think it was) was "re-discovered" by the public when a song of hers was used in a popular advert, the story going around was that she hadn't been paid any new royalties by the label because they didn't have her present address, and a friend of mine swore up and down that it was because she was living as a bag-lady.

  5. Jun 4, 2006 · In a bizarre move, Disney has unilaterally suspended royalty payments to author Alan Dean Foster for his early Star Wars novels and Alien film novelisations. The SFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America), the closest thing US SFF authors have to a union, has taken up the case...

  6. Jun 4, 2004 · Alan Dean Foster was one of the first authors who I actually followed by name (ie, I went to store and looked for books by him), and he is also one of the few widely published authors that I have met. (OK, it was at a small con about 20 years ago, but it happened!) I read all of the Flinx...

  7. Mar 26, 2019 · Trying to find a sci-fi short story I remember from childhood, ca. 1955-59, written in English. It centered on high-speed roads and the life-and-death challenge in driving on them. It was apparently required (either legally or socially) of young men approaching adulthood to make at least one...

  8. Aug 25, 2024 · Alan Dean Foster's Flinx series is forever long, but only the eponymous Flinx appears in all of them, and the epic plot doesn't feature in every book. Foster wrote loads of stories set in the Humanx Commonwealth, but most of them were standalone.

  9. Sep 15, 2020 · Then there are the more obscure genre authors or off genre authors who tend towards historical fiction, e.g. Alan Dean Foster, Guy Gavriel Kay, Isabel Allende. I'd also add an Arthuriana category, though some of that might have been on the original appendix N, e.g. Thomas Mallory, Chretien de Troyes, M. K. Hume.

  10. Mar 25, 2012 · This goes back to my "generally derivative" point. Given how many things Avatar is supposed to be a ripoff of, I'm reminded that "stealing from one source is plagiarism, but stealing from many sources is research," or, as Pete Seeger has Woody Guthrie saying about a guy who might have stolen a song of Guthrie's: "Oh, he just stole from me.
