I would agree that he was startled awake sounds better (at least in BE). The OED gives some examples of startle as an intransitive verb, but I have never come across this use.

PRESENT PERFECT: I have been woke up/ wakened/ awoke/ awakened (the context doesn’t matter here) I know that AWAKE is mostly used as an adverb. And awake/awaken when used as verbs sound more elevated.

I've been reading a lot of Edwardian (1900-20 approx) fiction recently and have been surprised to find that the past participle of awake was formerly awoke ("I have awoke"). I've come across it numerous times so it's definitely not a mistake.

Sep 23, 2014 · Interesting. In Palestinian Arabic "ba3idni faaye2/faay2a" means "I'm still awake"! "I just woke up" would be "ba3idni halla2 faaye2/fi2et."

If you interested, I'm sure you could find some usage notes somewhere on the net regarding the whole wake, awake, waken, awaken convolution.
