Struck by the “uselessness” of the hall’s upper part, and with unusual (for him) technical effort, American artist and filmmaker Morgan Fisher decided to highlight its features by mirroring them in the white cube that constitutes the building’s lower half. In their simple frames and leaders, his films and paintings reveal their structures and consequently the machinations that define them.
Throughout his life, Jack’s uncompromising directness was both disarming and precise. One of his last projects, Jack Goldstein and the CalArts Mafia, is a memoir written with Richard Hertz and including contributions by a group of Jack’s friends that reads like a who’s who of the ’80s art world (the book is slated for publication by Hertz’s Minnesota Press this month).
