The Palais-Royal (French: [pa.lɛ ʁwa.jal]) is a former French royal palace located on Rue Saint-Honoré in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. The screened entrance court faces the Place du Palais-Royal, opposite the Louvre .
The Palais-Royal and the associated gardens is a palace just a short distance north of the Louvre and at the southern end of the road that leads to the Opera. Although it doesn't take long to explore it is a lovely place and a tranquil escape from the crowds nearby, and free to enter, so certainly well worth a visit.

The Palais Royal is in two distinct parts : the palace itself and the galleries that surround the park on three sides. The Palais Royal was built in 1629 for Cardinal Richelieu by Le Mercier, who was also responsible for the Pavillion de l’Horloge in the Louvre and the Sorbonne.
The Palais-Royal is in some ways Paris in a nutshell: shops, cafés, art, history, and spectacular gardens from which to watch the beau monde file by.
