Despite many errors of judgement, director Stanley Donen's greatest mistake, and probably one that contributed hugely to the film's abject failure in the first place, was his removal of much of Bernstein's music - a decision that ruined the tempo and atmosphere of the film and practically destroyed its suspense and any emotional connection that the audience may have had for its overall story arc.
