The city originated from a Franconian manor that was first recorded in the 8th century. In the 12th century, the Duke of Clèves took possession of Wesel. The city became a member of the Hanseatic League during the 15th century. Wesel was second only to Cologne in the lower Rhine region as an entrepôt.

Wesel. Wesel’s location where the Rhine and Lippe rivers meet made it an important Hanseatic town even earlier. Today, its proximity to the water and the lush floodplain landscape create the perfect starting point for nature-orientated and relaxing leisure activities.
If you like military architecture. I can understand why the citadel was targeted by the allied forces during the Second World war as it was a military object. Why they bombed the whole city of Wesel to pieces for me is a mystery.
