De La Salle School in Kampong Bahru opened its classrooms in January 1952 under the charge of Rev Bro Thomas, Headmaster and Director. The first batch of teachers and pupils came on transfer from SJI. There were 7 teachers and 196 boys in seven classes, from Primary 1 to Standard 5.

This mission embodies the vision and innovative spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of all teachers and founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (De La Salle Brothers). The Lasallian mission provides a human and Christian education to the young, especially the poor.
La Salle Centre is established to develop, coordinate and provide formation, training and enrichment programmes for the Lasallian Family in Singapore. It will be service-oriented with emphasis on promoting volunteerism and aims to further our Lasallian Mission in Singapore.
The Brothers of the Christian Schools (or _De La Salle_ brothers) were invited to Singapore to establish SJI in 1852. Except for a short break of five years, they have been here since that time. They were founded in 1680 by a French priest, St. John Baptist de La Salle.
