Johnny Carson once again hosted as the 54th Annual Academy Awards were presented at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Monday, March 29th, 1982. The Best Picture win for Chariots of Fire was a surprise to many who thought that the heavily-nominated Reds and On Golden Pond would take home the top prize.

The nominees for the 54th Academy Awards were announced on February 11, 1982, by Academy president Fay Kanin and actor Lloyd Bridges. Reds earned the most nominations with twelve; On Golden Pond came in second with ten. The winners were announced at the awards ceremony on March 29.
The Special Achievement Award is an Academy Award given for an achievement that makes an exceptional contribution to the motion picture for which it was created, but for which there is no annual award category.
The Academy Award for Best Visual Effects is presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for the best achievement in visual effects. It has been handed to four members of the team directly responsible for creating the film's visual effects since 1980 .
