Because of his own political insecurity, Dorgon followed Hong Taiji's example by ruling in the name of the emperor at the expense of rival Manchu princes, many of whom he demoted or imprisoned. Dorgon's precedents and example cast a long shadow.

His reign (1644–61) was dominated by his uncle and regent, Dorgon, until Dorgon died in 1650.
