You will first encounter your rival here on Route 203. Your rival will approach and challenge you to a Pokemon battle once you set foot on this route.
The 2nd rival battle takes place here in Hearthome City. After visiting the Contest Hall, travel south of this city, and you'll find your rival waiting for you.
After challenging Gym Leader Wake here in Pastoria City, visit the gate near the Great Marsh building. Once there, talk to the Galactic Grunt. Then, your rival will arrive and challenge you in a Pokemon battle for the 3rd time.
The 4th rival battle is available in Canalave City. Go across the bridge, and your rival will meet you there.
You'll encounter your rival for the 5th time in Pokemon League. After approaching the trainer in front of the doorway, your rival will arrive and challenge you in a Pokemon battle.
The weekend battle is only accessible during weekends. However, you don't need to wait for weekends; change the system date of your Nintendo Switch through settings, and it will reflect on the game as well. To participate in the weekend battle, visit the Fight Areaand travel northeast. You'll find your rival waiting for you outside the gate.

- Route 203. Location: Route 203. When you reach Route 203, Barry will stop you and ask if you have grown any stronger and will quickly challenge you to a match.
- Oreburgh City. Location: Oreburgh City. When you reach Oreburgh City, you'll see Barry by the Gym. He will mention that Roark had to leave to go to the Oreburgh Mine, but mention that he has his badge already.
- Hearthome City. Location: Hearthome City. After you have looked for Fantina and gone to the Super Contest Hall, you will find Barry in Hearthome City.
