The Gin Bottle Four sessions are no milestone in the history of Jazz, but they did bring together some interesting mixed-race groups that spawned a few funky, feel-good tunes. It is also one King Oliver’s better performances as a sideman, rather than as a band leader.
Jun 18, 2007 · Thirty-eight years had then passed since Oliver’s band posed for that picture; there remained only a handful of rare old records and two surviving members to tell the story. Louis Armstrong and Lillian Hardin had met in the Oliver band, married in 1924, and gone on to make those extraordinary Hot Five recordings.

Lang was born in 1902, a second generation Italian, whose father was a luthier.There being a lot of prejudice about Italian immigrants at the time, he changed his name from Salvatore Massaro to Eddie Lang. (Sacco and Vanzetti were executed for murder in 1927, not because the evidence was good, but because they were Italians, immigrants, anarchists, and poor).
