Contner has also directed episodes of 21 Jump Street, Miami Vice, seaQuest DSV, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, The X-Files, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, Angel, Smallville, The Dead Zone (starring Nicole de Boer and David Ogden Stiers), and Firefly.
He has also worked as a cinematographer for both television and film during the 1980s. Among the movies he worked on this capacity were Cruising (1980), Nighthawks (1981, starring Persis Khambatta), Jaws 3-D (1983), The Flamingo Kid (1984), The Last Dragon (1985), and Monkey Shines (1988).
