Tributes to Past Masters. Sensei Don Nagle. April 5th, 1938 - August 23rd, 199 9. Master Nagle was born on April 5th, 1938. Master Don Nagle began his study of Isshinryu karate before the close of 1955 in the Kyan (Pronounced Chun) village in Okinawa, Japan with founder Tatsuo Shimabuku.
Official Karate recognized Don Nagle as a "Living Legend" in 1972. Don Nagle's notoriety was so great that he was asked to Promote the first miniaturized version of karate for kids, a toy called "Karate Men", at the Aurora Showroom for the annual toy fair in New York City in 1974.
Donald Nagle was an American marine, karate expert and instructor. Biography. Nagle was a Marine; in the mid-1950s he was stationed on Okinawa, in the Ryukyu Islands off the coast of Japan. There he studied karate under Tatsuo Shimabuku, who had started the Isshin-Ryu school. He was promoted to 8th-degree black belt in 1966.
Don Nagle was one of the first to bring Isshinryu to America, a traditional and very effective karate style recognized throughout the world. Our association is made up of Masters who studied directly with him and they can offer key insight into his teachings.
We are dedicated to the advancement and teachings of Isshinryu Karate through educational service, and to the inclusion and edification of all martial arts communities while preserving the legacy of Grand Master Don Nagle.

Don Nagle became a member of the Jersey City Police Department, in 1967, where he served with distinction, serving as an undercover drug officer and eventually a detective. He passed away on August 23, 1999 at the age of 61.
