A Wife among Wives. Directors: Judith MacDougall / David MacDougall. This is the third film in the Turkana Conversations trilogy: it investigates the views of the Turkana, and especially Turkana women, on marriage and polygyny.
The Wedding Camels is an ethnographic film directed by David MacDougall and Judith MacDougall, filmed in 1974 and released in 1980 (108 min., Turkana with English subtitles), that examines the negotiations and cultural practices that surround the tradition of the Turkana people of Kenya of giving a bridewealth before a wedding. [1]
All films have been shown to those filmed and were authorised by them. The Toposa and Turkana trilogies document different aspects of life, and in their sum allow for an insight into the local life between tradition and modernity.
David and Judith MacDougall are exploring the marriage rituals and roles of Turkana women in this ethnographic documentary. The film's biggest part is taken up by talks between the Turkana people.
