Two recurring themes in the cycle are contrast and the unexpected: on more than one occasion, there appears to be divergence, sometimes so subtle, between the character of the words and the music. Mark Padmore
This recording is the second for Padmore, who also put out an excellent (modern instrument) version with Paul Lewis on the same label back in 2009. Padmore does have similarities in timbre and approach to Bostridge in the aforementioned recording, but the performance is still unique. Padmore’s light tone gives way to effectively arched phrases and piercing emotion as in Wasserflut (6) or an effervescent excitement in Die Poste (13). Oct 29, 2016 · Thomas Adès, who begins his role as artistic partner with the BSO this season, proved a simpatico partner at the piano. Bostridge has been singing Winterreise for over thirty years and his interpretation of the work has only deepened over time.
By the time Ian Bostridge and Thomas Adès had got to Winterreise’s halfway point of ‘Einsamkeit’ (Loneliness), I’d given up on the idea of a trajectory of carefully plotted significances and, as were the two artists, lived for the moment. Bostridge is a veteran winter traveller, with many pianists.
