  6. Neal Hefti was born on October 29th, 1922 on a chilly, late autumn day, in the mid- Western State of Hastings, Nebraska. He commenced his musical education at the age of eleven on trumpet, and by the time he had reached fifteen had completed his first arrangement for the local Nat Towles band.
