John Day was a fur trapper and frontiersman who worked for both the Pacific Fur Company and the North West Company. Born in Culpeper County, Virginia , about 1770, when he grew up, he made his way to Missouri via Kentucky in 1798, settling in Franklin County.

John Day was engaged by the Wilson Price Hunt or 'Overland Party' of the Pacific Fur Company (Astorians) as a hunter in the fall of 1810. They were to cross the Plains and Rocky Mountains during 1811, and arrive in Astoria during the winter or early spring of 1812.
