    While attending the Faculty of Letters at Kwansei Gakuin University, he was drafted (the university graduated early) and ended the war on Sumatra Island . After living as a POW for a year, he returned to Japan in 1946 and joined Daiei Kyoto Studio in 1948 as an assistant director at the recommendation of his brother, who was a reporter for the Asahi Shimbun . After serving as chief assistant director under Kenji Mizoguchi , Kon Ichikawa , Kozaburo Yoshimura , Daisuke Ito , and Kazuo Mori , he made his directorial debut in 1958 with " Bakeneko Godai ".
