Jun 17, 2015 · Since 2011, João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata have built upon their long-time collaboration as writer-director and art director, respectively, with a series of projects exploring the relationship between Eastern and Western culture, most notably in their Maya End of Days noir-essay The Last Time I Saw Macao (12).
Its hero, an unseen narrator named Guerra da Mata (who shares many biographical details with his real-life counterpart), lives alone in Lisbon, engaged in a permanent dialogue with his memories.
João Rui Guerra da Mata was born in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique. He spent his formative years in Macao, China, then a Portuguese colony. He studied and trained in Graphic Design and Typography in Lisbon, Portugal, where he is currently based.
João Rui Guerra da Mata was born in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique. He teached Art Direction at the Lisbon Film School from 2004 to 2011. In 1997 he co-starred in the short PARABÉNS!, directed by João Pedro Rodrigues, that won the Special Jury Mention at the 54th Mostra di Venezia.
