    • WAYNE BEGAN LIFE ON A DIFFERENT SERIES ALTOGETHER. Though it’s Saturday Night Live that made Wayne Campbell a household name, the character—which Mike Myers began working on when he was still a teenager—began his on-screen life on Canadian television, first on the alternative video show City Limits and later on It’s Only Rock & Roll in 1987 in a sketch called “Wayne’s Power Minute.”

In the “Extreme Close-Up” featuretteon the Wayne’s WorldDVD and Blu-ray, Myers talks about how he came up with Wayne’s laid-back voice and stooped posture when he was still a preteen in Scarborough, Ontario, inspired by the long-haired, casually cool older kids he’d see at parties.
    • Carvey based Garth on his genius brother Brad. Though Garth was initially just Wayne’s dweeby disciple, Carvey helped flesh him out over time, making the sidekick more specifically into a kind of shy savant who was surprisingly adept at drumming and tinkering.
    • Director Penelope Spheeris was chosen because she knew metalheads – and worked fast. You couldn’t be blamed for being surprised at seeing Penelope Spheeris’ name show up in the credits back in 1992; at that point, the director was best-known for the seminal L.A.
    • Some of the movie’s best lines (and best reaction shots) were completely spontaneous. At the Academy’s Wayne’s Worldreunion, Carvey says that Spheeris’s best contribution to the project was her willingness to let everyone improvise, so long as they kept to her tight schedule.
