Edward Higgins White II (November 14, 1930 – January 27, 1967) was an American aeronautical engineer, United States Air Force officer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut. He was a member of the crews of Gemini 4 and Apollo 1 .
Edward H. White II was the first U.S. astronaut to walk in space. White graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., in 1952 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.

Ed White’s journey to becoming a space-walking astronaut began with military flight service. He graduated from West Point in 1952, after which came flight training, a Master’s degree in aeronautical engineering, and test pilot training.
