Willoughby Goddard was a rotund actor who played many villains and comic roles in theatre, television and film. He was known for his performances as Gessler in The Adventures of William Tell, Mr Bumble in Oliver! and Sir Geoffrey Norton in The Man in Room 17.
Actor. 3 July 1926 to 10 April 2008. Active on stage and television, Goddard lent menace or good humour to a variety of roles. The most memorable came in Drake’s Progress (1957), the villainous Gessler in the Adventures Of William Tell (1958-9), Mr Bumble in a BBC series of Oliver Twist (1962) and Tom Sharpe’s Porterhouse Blue (1987).
