Jason Benjamin (1971 – 16 February 2021) was an Australian painter. Biography. Benjamin was born in Melbourne in 1971. In his youth he lived in the United States and Mexico. After brief periods of study at The Stony Brook School on Long Island and the Pratt Institute in New York City, he returned to Australia in the early 1990s.

Feb 17, 2021 · Top Australian artist Jason Benjamin has died. The award-winning painter was found dead in the Murrumbidgee River on Tuesday after being last seen on Saturday at 8.40pm. “A man reported missing from Carrathool in the state’s Riverina district has been located deceased,” a NSW Police spokesperson said in a statement.

In painting Hunter’s portrait, Benjamin set about exploring the thoughts currently consuming him rather than trying to produce what he calls “a tawdry this-is-your-life portrait.” Benajamin visited Hunter on his remote property in country Victoria, sat and talked with him, took photographs of him, and generally got to know him.
