Jun 11, 2024 · Henry Box Brown was an American enslaved person who succeeded in escaping slavery by hiding in a packing crate that was shipped from the slave state of Virginia, where Brown had worked on a plantation and in a tobacco factory, to the free state of Pennsylvania.
(1815–97). Henry Brown was born into slavery on a plantation in Virginia. When he was an adult, he convinced an acquaintance to ship him to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he lived as a free man. He joined the abolitionist movement and later became a show business performer.
One of the memorable escapes from slavery was that of Henry Brown of Richmond when, on March 29-30, he had himself shipped in a crate as railroad freight from Richmond to Philadelphia. He made the twenty-seven-hour journey to freedom crammed into a box measuring 3 x 2 ½ x 2 feet.
