Michael William Gatting OBE (born 6 June 1957) [1] is an English former cricketer, who played first-class cricket for Middlesex (1975–1998; captain 1983–1997) and for England from 1977 to 1995, captaining the national side in twenty-three Test matches between 1986 and 1988. He toured South Africa as captain of the rebel tour party in 1990.
Mike Gatting was a right-handed top order batter and captain for England and Middlesex. He scored 4409 runs in 79 Tests and 2095 runs in 92 ODIs, and led England to the 1986-87 Ashes win.

- Middlesex legend: Gatting was born in Kingsbury, and played for Middlesex his entire county career. British journalist Matthew Engel once wrote about Gatting, “For two decades, it was a sight as characteristic of Lord’s as Father Time himself: Mike Gatting, with jutting beard and strutting gait, biffing the ball past extra-cover for Middlesex or England.”
- A unique track record: Gatting has one of the most interesting and unique records; he has played the exact same number of First-Class and List A matches: 551.
- A useful all-rounder: Though Gatting is known predominantly for his batting exploits, he was actually a handy medium-pacer as well. Though he did not bowl a lot in international cricket, he often sent down a few overs for Middlesex.
- A fateful reverse-sweep: Misbah-ul-Haq might hold the unwanted legacy of playing the most ill-advised shot in World T20 history, but Gatting probably holds that record in the longer version of the World Cup.
Mike Gatting played 79 Tests and 92 ODIs for England, scoring 10 international centuries and leading the team to an Ashes victory in 1986-87. He was also involved in controversies such as the reverse sweep against Border, the spat with Rana and the rebel tour of South Africa.
