Lucent Technologies, Inc. was an American multinational telecommunications equipment company headquartered in Murray Hill, New Jersey. It was established on September 30, 1996, through the divestiture of the former AT&T Technologies business unit of AT&T Corporation, which included Western Electric and Bell Labs.
It was formed in 2006 by the merger of France-based Alcatel SA and U.S.-based Lucent Technologies, the latter being a successor of AT&T's Western Electric and a holding company of Bell Labs.

The new company, Alcatel-Lucent, had revenues of Euro 18.6 billion, R&D investments of Euro 2.7 billion and a local presence in 130 countries.
In 1999, as the Internet boom was approaching its apex, Lucent Technologies was the world’s largest telecommunications equipment company.
