This prize was established in April 1990 with the support of the Japan Federation of Composers, and celebrates the achievements of the late Yasushi Akutagawa, who made significant contributions to the development of Western-style music in Japan in the post-war years.
Yasushi Akutagawa. Japanese composer and and conductor Yasushi Akutagawa was born on 12 July 1925 in Tabata, Tokyo. His father was the writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa, and his brother the actor Hiroshi Akutagawa. Yasushi Akutagawa studied composition at the Tokyo Conservatory of Music with Kunihiko Hashimoto and Akira Ifukube.
