The International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML; Māori: Te Pūtahi Tuhi Auaha o te Ao) is a centre of creative writing based within Victoria University of Wellington. Founded in 2001, the IIML offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses (including a PhD in creative writing) and has taught many leading New Zealand writers.

Nov 7, 2019 · NEWS. Acclaimed novelist Catherine Robertson has been appointed the Victoria University of Wellington International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML) and Creative New Zealand Writer in Residence for 2020.
Acclaimed memoirist, essayist, poet, and fiction writer Ingrid Horrocks has been appointed Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML) and Creative New Zealand Writer in Residence for 2024.
He is the founding patron of The International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University of Wellington. The Institute’s Schaeffer Fellowship in Comparative Literature has sponsored numerous writers, including Eleanor Catton, winner of the prestigious Man Booker prize in 2013 and Alice Miller, winner of the BNZ Katherine Mansfield Award.
