Synopsis. African-American history teacher Joe Clark (Morgan Freeman) instructs enthusiastic teenagers at Eastside High School in 1967 Paterson, New Jersey. His class is interrupted by fellow African-American teacher Frank Napier (Robert Guillaume), who alerts Joe that their union is holding a meeting without them.
