The Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai in 1911. The foundation stone was laid in 1911, and the monument was completed in 1924.
One of King’s most memorable experiences was residing at Mani Bhaven, Gandhi’s Bombay residence. He noted in the guestbook: “To have the opportunity of sleeping in the house where Gandhiji slept is really an experience I will never forget” ( Papers 5:134 ).
